I sleep on the floor - here's what I think after 6 months

What if I told you that sleeping on the floor could solve your sleep and back problems?

If you do get enough hours of sleep every night but still wake up sleepy or sore, you might wanna hear me out because, it can only go up from here.

Also, I've just released a video on this topic, check it out on YouTube!

I first heard about floor sleeping from Mike Chang on YouTube and it helped me justify not needing to buy a whole new mattress when I gave away my previous one. I'm so glad I stumbled upon his video, as I've discovered a whole new way of life here on the floor which has been so much better for me in so many ways.

Check out some of these comments I've gotten the past few videos -

It's wild to hear other people's positive experiences with floor sleeping (or, sleeping on a much-firmer surface). Especially amongst these older viewers, to hear that they are doing so much better now, maybe there's something to it!

DISCLAIMER - the advice in this newsletter is not medical advice, yada yada. Try it at your own risk, but if it works, do give me some credit, tell your friends, send them to my channel - thanks!

If nothing else seems to be working might as well try. Let’s see what kind of benefits they might be experiencing which has led them to embrace floor sleeping.

Benefits of sleeping on the floor

Sleeping on the floor is a practice some people adopt for potential health benefits. While not everyone may find it comfortable, and scientific backing is limited, some benefits that are often associated with sleeping on the floor include:

  1. Increased mobility - from having to get up and down. For me I'm all about building certain movements into my every day life so it's one less thing I have to actively worry about.
  2. Improved Posture - Sleeping on a hard surface can encourage better spinal alignment by minimizing sinking into soft surfaces like mattresses. This can help promote a natural posture during sleep.
  3. Back Pain Relief - For some, sleeping on the floor can alleviate lower back pain. A firmer surface can provide better support for the spine, which may reduce discomfort, particularly for those with chronic back pain. Here's the futon mattress I'm currently using, you can use code NATASHA10 for a discount :)
  4. Better Circulation - Sleeping on a flat, firm surface may help distribute body weight more evenly, reducing the pressure on different parts of the body. This can potentially improve blood circulation.
  5. Potential Reduction in Muscle Stiffness - Since soft mattresses can cause muscles to tense in an effort to stabilize the body, a firmer surface might help reduce tension in the muscles, leading to less stiffness upon waking. For me, i always woke up with a stiff neck, and sometimes it'd be so bad I'd be sore fro a week. Since I switched to the floor I haven't had any neck tweaks
  6. Cost-Effective - Sleeping on the floor eliminates the need for a bed and mattress, making it a low-cost option, especially for those who may be seeking minimalist lifestyles. I gave my bed away a few months ago because even though we spent $1k on it, it just didn't really feel like it was worth it. I didn't want to buy a whole other expensive mattress so I decided to try sleeping on the floor instead, and now I can't ever see myself going back.
  7. Fall asleep faster - I used to toss and turn a lot before actually getting to bed, but when I'm in my floor mattress, I feel like I fall asleep within 2-5 minutes tops. My sleep scores are consistently in the 80s & 90s. I use this RING to track my sleep quality each day and I love that you don't need to subscribe to anything.
  8. Cooling Effect - The floor tends to stay cooler than elevated surfaces, especially in warmer climates. Sleeping on the floor can provide a cooler environment, which may lead to more comfortable sleep for some people. However, I know it's a bit different in the colder months LOL.
  9. Mental and Physical Discipline - Some people view sleeping on the floor as a form of discipline that helps foster resilience, awareness, and connection to simpler, more natural living. I'm going to agree with this, to me, it's a form of physical minimalism and I love it. I just feel like there's so much less to take care of in the morning and if I want, I can easily roll up the bed and move it out of the way to reclaim my space for other things.

Considerations:

Comfort Level: It can be uncomfortable, especially in the beginning, and not everyone adjusts well to sleeping on such a firm surface. If you're going to go for it and don't have any super serious health issues, I'd give it at least a solid 2 weeks before drawing conclusions.

Allergies or Dust Exposure: If the floor isn’t regularly cleaned, sleeping on the floor can expose you to dust, dirt, or allergens. But for me I like sleeping on the floor b/c I have no choice but to clean it.

Have you tried floor sleeping? Some people have commented on the video and shared what has worked for them, especially for when they ditched their traditional beds and made the transition!
